Hey cHEwY gum gums
It’s December, which means the end of the year is near…and it’s a cHEwY tradition with my blog to dedicate the last three posts to reviewing the year, and wowee it’s been another superb one.
So let’s kick things off with a look at my favourite media; films, songs and albums and of course games!
Movies
My favourite three movies of 2019 are (and this is assuming that Star Wars: Rise of the Skywalker will not make it PROVE ME WRONG J.J ABRAMS!)
Avengers: End Game
It’s just not fair is it? After Avengers Infinity War took my top spot last year, I thought Marvel couldn’t pull another rabbit out of the hat. While it’s not as good as Infinity War, it’s a cinematic event for the ages. It’s an awesome adventure that pays tribute to the earlier Avengers films. I cried nerdy tears when they did that shot of ALL OF THE HEROES. It’s the same feeling you’d get when you see a double spread of every favourite hero in a comic book.
Alita: Battle Angel
Now this is how you do an anime adaptation (I’m looking at you Ghost in the Shell). There is so much life brimming in this world, and the effects gave me that wow-factor, that I’ve not seen in a non-superhero movie for ages. Wonderful action scenes that build up to a great sequel that will never happen…sadly.
Godzilla 2: King of Monsters
I’m a massive Godzilla fan, and I also loved King Kong: Skull Island. This monster-verse may have not reached Marvel heights, but this latest installment does a great job in keeping the lore and legend of Godzilla. This is a big-screen blockbuster delight, the colours and styles are dazzling. Bring on Godzilla vs Kong next year!
Music
I still buy physical CD albums, and my three favourite albums are:
Jonas Brothers: Happiness Begins
Wowee, as an old-school JoBro fan, this was a stellar comeback. Thanks to the huge response to their comeback hit ‘Sucker’, Jonas Brothers actually made it to Aussie radio, something that they didn’t do when they were ‘Big’ in 2006. I’ve been following Nick Jonas’ solo career, as well as Joe Jonas’ side-band DNCE, and this album is the kind of mature pop that I adore.
Post Malone: Hollywood’s Bleeding
Yeah he’s a rapper, but Stoney’s had a few ‘pop’ hits where he sings like Better Now. Post Malone’s latest album is filled with these pop rock songs, and it doesn’t get any better than Circles, something you’d expect America, The Eagles or Chicago to sing back in the 70s and 80s. Throw in the bonus track, Sunflower (my personal fave of 2018) and this is a well-rounded album
Tyga: Legendary
Yes, I’ve been into Hip-hop, rap and RnB since I was in high school. When Tyga burst onto the scene in 2012, I was hooked on his flows. So it was nice to see him back with last year’s catchy ‘Taste’ with Offset, which is one of the banging tracks in his latest album. He boasts that he’s the light-skinned Lil Wayne, and he does have a bit of Wheezy’s swagger in his delivery. It was in high rotation on the way to schools this year haha.
Games
It’s been another awesome year of gaming, thanks to my beloved Nintendo Switch Lite. This lighter version of the Switch means that I can now carry on my gaming in more places.
Fire Emblem: Three Houses-Nintendo Switch
Wowee. I’ve been hooked on these war strategy-based games for over a decade, and Fire Emblem Three Houses delivers more of that goodness but on a larger scale. I’m still halfway through the first campaign, but I predict that I’ll be chipping away at this game into 2020.
Borderlands 3-Xbox One X
Again, I’m a huge Borderlands fan. The mix of first person shooter and RPGs made these games so addictive. This third installment in the mainline series is no expection. They’ve expanded the world in more ways than one and while the plot isn’t that memorable as Part 2, it’s still a blast…and it supports local co-op, so it’s perfect for some couch blasting!
Yoshi’s Crafted World-Nintendo Switch
This is my mellow-out game. Yoshi games are never hard, but that’s the best thing about it. I can unwind playing a few levels with my favourite game dinosaur. Did I mention that this game is ultra-cute? There are some clever ideas wrapped around art and paper crafts too, which is also another reason to keep playing.
Next week, my favourite Books and Burgers! Yummo (the burgers, not the books haha)
