Happy New Year and a Bunny New Year too! Yes, after taking a month off, I’m back on the writing horse, ready to ride it into book town and slay some stories.
It’s shaping up to be another stellar year for cHEwY creations. First shameless plug is for a show that I’m performing in, a cabaret show called About Face at the Belvoir Street Theatre. I’m lucky to be a part of a variety of song, dance and comedy.
The rehearsals were fun, as we all tried to beat the heat by chilling in the downstairs theatre.
On the writing front, I’m working on my first draft of Punchlines, a story about a teenager who wants to be a stand up comedian. It’s going alright, I mean, I’m pushing on…I’ve read Anne Lamott’s writing life book, Bird by Bird. I found myself nodding too many times as she dished out the real goss of writing. Like she said, publication is not a final destination, it’s the writing that really defines you.
I’m getting my Connerd edits very soon, so I can’t wait to get stuck into that. I haven’t read my manuscript in over 3 months so I should have a fresh eye over Connor and his friends. I feel like this is going to be a great second book. It’s got a different vibe to Thai-riffic! but it’s not like I’ve gone too far from the comedy thing. It’s still there-I hope heaheaheahea but I just feel that there’s nothing like this book yet.
I’ve been reading Conspiracy 365 all Summer. I won a boxed set at the CBCA Christmas dinner, signed by the legendary Gabrielle Lord. The boys in a few classes last year loved this series and it’s easy to see why, pumping action and mystery all the way. Just like 24, it’s got twists too.
My reading list keeps growing…I’m also keen to read Amy Chua’s book, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother. I’m doing a keynote address and workshop for a teacher’s PD day in Melbourne about Asian-Australian texts. It seems like perfect timing with Connerd about the corner, high pressure parents who want their child to be No.1 But just like Highlander said, there can only be one number one…anyway, there’s another story brewing about this topic in my head…stay tuned hehehe.
So yeah, busy year ahead of me but it means more cHEwY fun and surprises for you all 😉
